A Paid Writer

Yes, got the check for my first freelance writing gig!!! Thanks Black America Web. There's nothing like getting paid for what you love to do because I would've done it for the writing credit alone. I'm definitely praying for more open doors because we all know it's rough out there!!!

So my next step is to continue working on my book. This is no easy task because, at times, the writing bug hits me & then it goes away (I know, you wouldn't think this from my blog posts!!), but it's true. I guess it depends on what my writing mood is & the topic. I just want to do the best I can. Having a published book is on my "bucket list".

Now what is a "bucket list" you may ask. It's the list of things you want to do or really would like to do in your lifetime. It's the things you've been putting off until "later" or "when you have the time". Well all, get to it & start checking off the dreams, desires, & wishes on that list because the next day is not guaranteed. Also, check out the movie, "The Bucket List" with Morgan Freeman. It's great!!

Daily Scriptures 9/30/08

Scripture: Proverbs 14:5 An honest witness does not lie; a false witness breathes lies.

Nugget: We’ve all heard that honesty is the best policy. I take this as, “Honesty will get you further than lying”. We all know that one lie turns into another at some point; it’s a snowball effect. Try honesty & see how far it goes; there’s nothing like it.

Daily Scriptures 9/29/08

Scripture: II Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Nugget: So many of us open our Bibles on Sunday or Saturday &/or at Bible Study only. We must study to show ourselves approved to God; we should be feeding ourselves God’s word daily!! It’s the only way to fight the battles that arise in our lives. Keep God’s word as a constant flow of information into your mind & heart.

Quote: “Prayer without study would be empty. Study without prayer would be blind.” –Karl Barth

Looking Back to Look Forward

The past....there's so much to say about it. It molds who we are, it molds who we become, it hinders some, it allows some to grow..... What is it for you????

I've had a few conversations with friends & family about past experiences. I've learned so much, but one of the things at the top of the list is that your past does not have to become your future. We think that we may become our parents or a not-so-good product of the environment we grew up in. It's the reality that we knew & came to expect. However, how are you using the past to help you in your future? Because if you're letting your past continue to use you, then where's the growth? The self-improvement?

So many people hang on to the past & it gets them nowhere. BUT if you can look at the past & learn & grow from it, then that's a good thing. If you can look at the past hurts, pains, & people who hurt you, then you can move on.

Only in America can you come from a background of proverty or one that seemed "rough" & become "something" or "someone". You can get that education you seek, that dream job you want, that house-on-the-hill. Yes, even with the economy the way it is!!! Because, believe me, I know people who are still doing all of this in the midst of this ecomonic downfall!

You may ask, "Where do I start?". "Somewhere" is the answer. Check yourself & realize the things/people that have hurt you or continue to hurt you, think on the things you've overcome & learned from, where are the areas that you can still grow, write a letter to the person who's hindering/hurt you to let it go. (I've tried it, & you may be doing it more for yourself than for the person because they may have no clue as to where you're coming from!). But DO YOU & see what happens. Don't let the past hold you back from the something better in your life.

Start somewhere & see what happens.

Philippians 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.

Until next time.

Next Movie: "The Secret Life of Bees"

"The Secret Life of Bees" is on the list of my next must-see movies. It stars Dakota Fanning, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, & Sophie Okonedo. What a talented cast!! We've all seen Dakota grow up; so much knowledge in a young person.

The movie's synopsis is:

"The moving tale of Lily Owens, a 14 year-old girl who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father, Lily flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and only friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping, honey and the Black Madonna."

The movie trailer:

The release date is October 17th.

Until next time.

Blessings.

What's Going On??

What exactly is going on with the world today?? Here in America alone, we face job losses, a down economy, & more. What exactly will happen to make things get "back to normal". Personally, I believe it will take a lot of time. However, a lot of what is happening is stated throughout the Bible. We must remember to put our faith in God & not in man.

No matter who becomes president (off subject, this is one of the presidential races that will go down in history), we must know that God has control of all. That's why we have to stay prayed up in the midst of all that's going on, otherwise these various things (economy, job losses, etc.) will drive us crazy.

Psalm 118:8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

God is in control & has the final say-so. This is what keeps me going during these hard times!

Until next time.

A Bit Discouraged...

I mainly try to keep positivity in my grasp. However, there are those few moments when I allow the wrong thoughts to come into my mind. I say "allow" because we are in control of what we think & what we do, so yesterday was my day to get discouraged about my job hunt for better employment.

However, I had to catch myself & find out where this thought came from. Someone I know said, "You've been saying that for years" when I mentioned seeking a better job. Hmmmm. Yes, I have & that's why I went to school to get an advanced degree: for opportunities for the better. Now we know not to let people speak negativity to us, now don't we? I'm so glad that I have positive thinking to combat the negative that people will bring.

Also, we must always "call things that be not as though they were" (Romans 4:17). So if you're seeking something, keep praying, stay steadfast, & if you're the only one seeing the vision, then so-be-it. You have to hang onto mustard seed faith in many situations because that's the only thing that will get you through.

There's a song one of my friend's sings @ church (thanks Alysha!!) called "Encourage Yourself" by Sheri Jones-Moffett. Here's a video of Sheri singing the song:

It's an awesome song!! Be encouraged & faithful.

Until next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 9/25/08

Scripture: Psalm 120:6 I am tired of living among people who hate peace. (New Living Translation)

Nugget: Once you get to the point where you are seeking continual peace in your life, you don’t want to be surrounded by anything or anyone to the contrary. Being at peace clears your mind for prayer, guidance, direction & more; examine those things that take peace from you & focus on those things that bring you peace.

Daily Scriptures 9/24/08

Scripture: Jeremiah 6:10 To whom can I give warning? Who will listen when I speak? Their ears are closed, and they cannot hear. They scorn the word of the Lord. They don’t want to listen at all. (New Living Translation)

Nugget: How many times have you been given advice & you just wouldn’t listen? Or if you were listening, you weren’t truly hearing what was being said? We tend to let good advice fall on deaf ears when we “want to do what we want to do”! However, a “hard head makes a soft behind” as my mom would say.

Take heed to good advice, seek it, & try to implement it into your life. You know those who are truly trying to give you the advice you need (& sometimes the advice you may not want to hear).

Big Blessings in Little Bundles

I'm experiencing a lot of friends who are becoming first-time mothers & fathers. I got to hold one of my oldest & dearest friend's son today. He is too adorable!! I know that she's wanted to be a mother from day 1, so this little bundle is a tremendous blessing to her, her husband, family, & friends.

For my other mommy-to-be & daddy-to-be friends, I know that a lot is on the way for them. They are truly good people with experiences that will mold them & prepare them to be good parents. Too many times today we hear about teen pregnancies, people abandoning their children, & more. We seldom hear the good in the parenting realm.

It's good to be surrounded by people who see the blessings in what they have. It allows me to see that there are better examples than I was faced with in my parents. The past does not determine the future & we truly don't have to be our parents. I don't know if I will be a parent, but if God has this in store for me, I'm grateful to the concrete people I have in my circle & will wait for the good man God has for me to take this journey with me.

Congrats, guys & gals. May God continue to bless you. You are a blessing to me for allowing me to be a part of this next journey in your lives. Auntie/Cousin/Sister-in-Christ (insert name here) is here for the little ones & you :)

Until next time.

This year is flying by....Fall is here!

My goodness, can you believe that it's the 1st day of Fall!! Although we don't see the weather changing too much in Florida, I love this time of the year! It gets to the point where it's not too hot or not too cold :)

But yes, it's already September. I look back on the goings-on for this year and I can say that's it's been good so far. It's been crazy too (as far as the economy, etc.), but I have to count my blessings: food, clothing, water, somewhere to live, friends, family, etc.

For those who made New Year's Resolutions, double check your lists; time is running thin. LOL. But seriously, enjoy each day. Tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Happy Fall!!!

Until next time.

Blessings.

Daily Scriptures 9/22/08

Scripture: Genesis 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

Nugget: God did not design man to be alone. He created a woman just for Adam. He has the same plan for most of us; those who are waiting for their other half, continue to do so. Allow God to bring them your way. As Pastor says, “They may come in a package you least expect”.

Do You Know Jesus???

Today & every Sunday you'll find me in church. It wasn't always this way, but now it is. I pray for everyone to get to know Jesus!!! He died for us when He didn't have to. God sent Him down to die for our sins in order for us to be saved.

John 3:16-17 states: 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

The Christian walk is an on-going process. So many people think that they have to be perfect before coming to the Lord (I thought this!). I wanted to get this right & get this out of the way before I accepted Him into my life, but that's not how it works. We must come to God as we are & He continues to work on us. We are all a "work in progress"!! He will start the process for the changed person you wish to be.

If you are in doubt about what direction to take, Pray. God could be calling you, but are you listening? If you think you have to be perfect, no one really is: come as you are. If you are trying to find a home-church, don't give up. If you need prayer, there are many who will pray for you & are praying on your behalf right now.

Continue to seek God, He is not lost. He is in range & is waiting with open arms for you.

May God bless all you do & your walk with Him. I'll keep you uplifted in continual prayer :)

Until next time,

~Lisi P.

For My Singletons....

Why is it that so many people feel that they can say anything to single people? I know what my pregnant friends feel like, in a sense. For those who are expecting or have given birth, they hear some strange stuff: "Can I touch your belly?", "How much weight have you gained?", "Are you having twins?" (When you aren't!).

Yes, being single gives people what they consider "free reign." We hear everything from: "When are you getting married?" to "Why are you single?" What I've learned is to ignore the ones who are negative & to enjoy this time in my life. Yes, this is the season I'm in & is exactly where I'm supposed to be. Once this season passes, I cannot go back & the next one will start.

Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Be content with who and what you are before you can be with someone else. Many people want the relationships & the marriage, but they aren't completely happy with who they are; they do not love themselves. They feel that another person will complete them, but aren't we all complete individuals? Don't 2 separate, but complete, individuals come together to make a couple???

Another bit of advice, seek wisdom from older people who have been there & done that. Those who have experience & can lead you in the right direction. I have this in my adoptive mothers & my male role models (love you guys!!). But DO NOT seek advice from someone who has a bad track record & continues to make the same bad choices over & over & tries to speak "wisdom" in your life. I repeat, keep walking!!

Enjoy the time of your life that you're in. Once it passes, there's no going back. If you're a Singleton out there, get out, date, spend quality time with the ones you love & yourself, travel, volunteer...... DO SOMETHING. Don't waste the time you have because it can be the most enjoyable time of your life!!!

Until next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 9/18/08

Scripture: Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

Nugget: So many times people get caught up in material possessions and the things they own. How soon they forget that God is the one who invented everything; if He didn’t invent it, then He’s definitely the one who gave people the gift to invent it!

Material possessions are temporary; get to know the Creator of all things.

Quote: “To reach the System of GOD, one must let go and get beyond all systems ever invented by human. Then you realize so much nonexistence is existent. And so much existence is nonexistent.” –Rinon Hoxha

Jury Duty, Part 2.....

Okay all, I just returned home from doing my civic duty: jury duty. It was an all day thing! I wasn't chosen for the jury. However, I was not too upset about that. What a day: legal jargon, hard benches to sit on, security checks & more. I did meet some interesting people though :) I can say this for sure, there are only a few reasons I want to visit the courthouse in the future: my marriage license, for a Passport renewal, or adoption (if I chose to adopt one day). I don't feel that jury duty is my thing. But that doesn't mean "they" won't find me again.......

Also, I give the judicial system some credit. At least we get the opportunity to a trial by jury & one w/ an outcome that entails us to give our side of the story. Yes, in the midst of this crazy, long, exhausting day, there is a silver lining. God bless America!!!

Until next time.

Jury Duty!!!!

Oh guys, "they've" found me. I've been under the "jury duty radar" for years!! Yes, I got the summons in the mail to report & today is the day. They call it our civil duty; okay, we'll see how this goes.

I remember when I was little most people didn't register to vote because they thought they'd get jury duty. Funny, those same people feel that way now. However, "they" will find you by your driver's license, car registration, etc. So, if you haven't registered to vote because of this, please register!! Call 1-866-MY-VOTE-1 to do so. Every vote counts. AND don't forget to do your research on the candidates; vote with knowledge on your side.

Wish me luck on this experience. Maybe my # won't come up today :)

Until next time.

Blessings,

Uplifting Thoughts.....

As you can see, I've began publishing the "Daily Scriptures" on my blog. I usually send them out in emails, but everyone needs an uplifting word!!! I pray that you check them out & they help somehow during your day/week/etc.

There is so much power in the words that we speak & think. You know how far negativity can get you; you think one negative thought & it snowballs into more. I find that one of the most difficult things to do is to not complain when things are going a certain way (yes, I had the Monday Blues yesterday, so I had to combat that!). With this said, there has to be more positive to combat the negative.

Regardless of the situation going on, music does help. I find that my "fighter" songs are "Survivor" by Destiny's Child (yes, I'm a fan!), a few of Mary, Mary hits like "Incredible", & the whole Kirk Franklin "Hero" CD (you have to check this one out!).

Speaking of Kirk Franklin, if you're a fan in the Central Florida Area, he will be in concert on Nov. 7, 2008 @ Northland Church in Longwood, FL. You can find more info here

Until next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 9/16/08

Scripture: Jeremiah 10:23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Nugget: Many people believe that they are “self-made”; they don’t believe that someone else is in control of their lives. Too bad they don’t know that God is the one who directs everything: our steps, paths, and plans. Of course we have to be working (faith without works is dead), but God is the one who leads us into what He’s called us to do.

Quote: “There is a gift available to all of us-the gift of looking to God for direction. Here is an avenue of strength, comfort, and guidance. . . . "Look to God and live." This is the wonderful promise given so often in the scriptures. . . . Our capacity to see and comprehend is increased only in proportion to our willingness to look. God becomes more approachable as we look to him.” –Marvin J. Ashton

Daily Scriptures 9/15/08

Scripture: Psalm 70:1 MAKE HASTE, O GOD, TO DELIVER ME; MAKE HASTE TO HELP ME, O LORD.

Nugget: We’ve all been through something or are going through something where all we can do is call on God. In these situations, we want Him to rescue us or show us some sign of deliverance in a hurry! There’s nothing wrong with calling on God during these times; most times He is the only one who can help.

If there’s something going on that you are looking for answers/etc., have you tried God?

Quote: “If we seek first the Kingdom of God and live as we should, all the rest of life seems to fall into place and wonderful things happen.” –David B. Haight

Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys"

Today I had the opportunity to see Tyler Perry's "The Family That Preys". I heard it was a good movie & the previews got my attention. Needless to say, it was a good movie & will make you think.

I won't tell the movie, just in case you want to see it :) I can, however, say that Tyler P. did a great job in casting the characters: Kathy Bates, Alfre Woodard, Sanaa Lathan, Taraji P. Henson, Robin Givens. They fit the characters well. Just in case you want to see a clip, you can check it out:

There's one quote from the movie I'd like to discuss: "Are you living or are you existing?". Living, according to Webster's Dictionary, is "exhibiting the life or motion of nature; action, functioning." Existing is "continuing to be." So we can continue to be (sitting in bed all day, lounging around) & not have any function or action behind it, or chose to get up & take some action.

There should be at least one thing in life you should want to live for; one thing that makes you want to get out of bed each day: the love of God, to feed a pet, to go to the bathroom, SOMETHING. Basically, don't just BE, LIVE.

I know we all have our down days, but the good truly outweighs the bad when you look at it all. If you feel that you can't think of one thing that's good, start making a list & get back to me on it :)

Until next time.

Blessings,

Lisi P.

Applying & Waiting

I know so many of us out here looking for jobs, a better job, or a career. Personally, I want the career. Yes, the job gets me by (paying bills, etc.), but am I happy? Hmmm. As a writer, I would rather have the writing career than go from paycheck to paycheck in a job that has no growth, but we have to do what we have to do and the bills will continue to roll in no matter what.

Pastor said in a sermon a few weeks ago, "If you find a job you really love to do, then you'll never work a day again in your life!" This quote impacted me because it's like, "Yes, that's what I want." And many others want as well.

So what is it that you would do if you could do it for free? That's most likely your calling. What will put that smile on your face everyday? That's your dream! What is it that you strive for? That's your destiny.

So for those of us who are applying and waiting, looking for the next best thing, keep doing this. Don't forget to keep your dreams in mind. No point in doing something you wouldn't love doing.

Until next time.

TGIF!!!!

TGIF!!! Friday is here. We mainly wait all week for this day, especially since the weekend is on the horizon. Yes, there's nothing like Friday!

On today, one of my sista-friends celebrates her 30th birthday. Happy Birthday, Ms. A.A.A!!! Yes girlie, enjoy today & all that it brings.

Looking at my friend turning 30, makes me reflect on prior years. Yes, at 30, one is definitely still young, but 3 decades have gone by: from being an infant to a young adult. A lot has happened in that time, especially growth into a better person (hopefully!).

So in being a better person, let us look at cleaning things up a bit & letting go of the things we don't need. For instance, are there things in your closets that you don't wear, haven't looked at in or haven't fit into in a few months or years??? Clean the closet and get rid of the stuff! This, my friends, is a form of baggage. More stuff to hang onto for no reason. Is it time to reevaluate some other things that need to be released? Then do this too. Because things & people will become the weights in your life that you don't realize.

As we look back,
  • 0-10 years old was childhood (the good ol' days!)
  • 11-20 was where we went from elementary, middle, high schools to college (wow!)
  • 21-30 was where most graduated college, found some direction regarding a career/etc., got married, traveled, etc. (yes, more falls into this age bracket!!)

This outline is just a small synopsis of the events that have occurred. These milestones let us know that from this point on, we need to be surrounded by friends & family who are there for the long haul; those people who can help raise our children, pray for us, be there when we are sick, lift us up no matter what. There's more, of course. The point is, the tides are changing & there will be some important stuff coming up that we will face. A strong support system will be needed.

The gist of today's message is to clean up, clean out, reevaluate, & move forward to what's in store! Check your surroundings & those who surround you. Ladies & gents, a new horizon is upon us.

Philippians 3:13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead (New Living Translation)

Blessings.

Until next time,

Sept. 11th: 7 Years Later

The calendar says it's Sept. 11th. Wow, has it really been 7 years since America witnessed the destruction of the Twin Towers, the loss of many lives, the changes to many more lives, & the attack on America???!!!

If you ask anyone what they were doing on this day 7 years ago, I would say 99.9% of people would remember. I know it was my last semester in Undergrad and I was in Animal Behaviors class. When class was over, we all were in the lobby of the building and the school staff was pushing TVs out into the area for everyone to watch what was going on. I honestly thought, "Oh, something happened in New York." This is because I was on my way to work and did not want to be late. Little did I know what was really going on. I mean, an attack on America through the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. Wow.

So now that it's this many years later, what is truly different? Well, we remain "at war" for some reason. I don't think that I'll be able to explain the meaning of this war to my future children. Men and women are fighting to defend America in Iraq and other places. We have to truly commend out military! So many lives have been lost!! Yes, we must commend them, but also pray for them: the mothers who are losing children, the military personnel who are away from families, the families who miss their loved ones.

There are so many spectrums to consider!! There's so much to think about and so many unanswered questions. For instance, "When will the war end?", "Why are we fighting?", "When will Mommy/Daddy/Brother/Sister/Etc. come home?". I don't think the answers will come as quickly as we'd like.

I think of those who have a birthday today; those who wanted today to be a holiday. I feel that the 2 somewhat coincide. Because if today was a holiday, it may get to the point where we see it as another "day off". For those who have a birthday today, it somewhat gets swallowed up by the memory of what happened. Do we really think about this date other than when it gets here? I pray so, because it's a constant reminder of the whole experience. Not that it should overwhelm us and take control, but the impact of what happened should be with us forever.

As we reflect on this Day of Rememberance, don't forget to pray. Pray for all those, who today, changed their lives forever (this should be all of us!). Ask God to continue to provided strength to families, the stressed military, our leaders, and more.

Life is precious, enjoy the time you have. If Sept. 11th taught us anything, this should be one of the lessons. As we live on, consider what you're doing with the time God has blessed you with! Don't let the lost lives and those fighting be in vain!

Sept. 11th a day to remember.

Until next time.

Blessings.

Finally!!

So, I've finally decided to enter the world of having my own blog! My friends have encouraged me to do this (thanks ladies!!). Not that I'm new to blogging, just never ventured out to having my own site. I want to use this blog to share experiences, encourage, and more. I'm sure that the experiences will be interesting; if not, my thoughts will get ya!!!

For today, I'd like to start off with something positive. Since this year is way more than half-way over, I reflect back on what I wanted at the beginning of the year. One of those things was to continue to have myself surrounded by positive people. This has happened for me!!! The nay-sayers have fallen by the wayside and life continues on with those who have my back and can tell me like-it-is out of love!!! There's nothing like some positive sista-friends, brotha-friends, and family. For you who are surrounded by the ones who have things to "add" to your life other than positivity, reevaluate these relationships and determine if they are truly healthly for you. Sometimes we hang on to the stuff we need to let go of the most!!

On this note, I sign off from my 1st posting!! Have a great day and know that each day is a gift from God. Enjoy it.

Until next time.

Blessings,

~Lisi P
