Daily Scriptures 8/31/09

Scripture: Proverbs 13:20 Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble. (NLT)

Nugget: Be careful of the friends and associates you surround yourself with. Sometimes, they could be the elements that make you or break you. For instance, in high school, my friends & I all wanted to go to college & sought that goal together. On the other hand, if we were seeking to stroll along & do nothing, we would’ve been the blind leading the blind & could’ve ended up anywhere.

Surround yourself with people who can add positivity to your life, not those who hinder the direction you’re going in.

Quote: “Be careful the environment you choose for it will shape you; be careful the friends you choose for you will become like them“. -W. Clement Stone

Daily Scriptures 8/28/09

Scripture: I Peter 1:8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy (NIV)

Nugget: That’s faith! Believing in the presence of God in your life & knowing He’s there although you can’t see Him. Just knowing God & His power are enough to bring joy to your life. Joy comes from God; happiness comes from things. That’s why many people place happiness in the hands of belongings & other people. But joy, that’s complete belief in God, His presence, & all that He brings.

Quote: "Joy is a quiet gladness of heart as one contemplates the goodness of God's saving grace in Christ Jesus." -John Calvin

Joyful!!!

I've been doing some reflecting lately. I'm so grateful to God to have reached a place of joy! God is sooooo good. He has brought me from so much to where I am today. It's amazing when you reflect & can see the transformation in yourself. Funny thing is, you probably don't know when the change occurs, but it happens! God works that way sometimes.

I think what I've learned the most is to let God do His will. Sit back & see what He can do! I'm at the place where I don't let so many things get to me, especially things I can't change or have no control over. So many people have seen this change in me & some haven't, but I'm going to keep it moving!

I pray for continued peace & joy, as I know things will come up regardless. But now I know how far faith can carry me, how far God has brought me! There's nothing He can't do, we just have to let Him in. I'm grateful for growth & continued change in positive directions. I'm joyful!!

Until next time.

Blessings,

~Lisi P.

Daily Scriptures 8/27/09

Scripture: I Peter 2:15 For it is God's will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. (NIV)

Nugget: People are people, & people will talk about you. The thing is, you must continue to do God’s will, regardless. Being in God’s will, doing what He’s called you to do, & staying on this path will usually silence the ignorant.

No one can touch God’s anointed ones!

Daily Scriptures 8/26/09

Scriptures: I Peter 2:1-3 1 Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, 2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

Nugget: There are some things & people we need to put aside in order to grow in God. These scriptures mention “as newborn babes” we should want to be taught God’s word. I think of children who are willing to learn & are full of questions, seeking answers. If we had this same mindset, just imagine the possibilities!! We all know God’s goodness, now let’s learn all we can in order to mature in our walks with God.

Daily Scriptures 8/25/09

Scripture: Proverbs 20:5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out.

Nugget: This is one of my favorite verses in proverbs, because it speaks to the importance of listening. There are people around us who have great insights that we can benefit from; but we don't take the time to "draw it out". Usually, it's that we are too busy talking; not patient enough to listen; and most times - it is also that we don't ask questions or the right questions. You will be amazed at what types of insights you get from the most unlikely sources, when you take time to ask the right questions AND are patient enough to listen without interruption. Remember - counsel in the heart of a man is like deep water.......asking the right questions enables you to draw the water out from the well.

Daily Scriptures 8/24/09

Scripture: Proverbs 19:18 Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

Nugget: Discipline your children while they can still take correction and don't get distracted or sidetracked by emotions. They will cry now, but both them and you will smile later. But to me this verse is more than just kids - it applies to our dealings with tough situations in life.

Too often, we are faced with tough decisions that we know we need to make, but from fear of hurting someone; or of feeling bad; or of saying "I've already invested so much in this" - we go forward. Unfortunately, in the end, it costs us much more later down the road, than if we had made the tough decision earlier. Examples: Ending a relationship you know has issues; but instead you choose to stay on and marry the person because you have dated for 10 years. Can I go on? Deciding not to get rid of an employee who is causing chaos, because you feel bad and what will people think - yet, the whole team is being dragged down by their presence. One more - you have committed to an agreement to invest in a company, but before you sign you realize there are some things that you are not so sure about. However, in order to save face, you go ahead - even though in your heart you know its a wrong investment.

We can go on and on - summary of it all is, play out the projected outcome in your mind and be brave enough to make the tough choice now, even with the short term emotional impact. You'll thank yourself for it later.

Praise Song: "Dance, Dance, Dance"

This week's praise song is Mary Mary's "Dance, Dance, Dance". This song is so catchy!! Reminds me that no matter what the situation, the outcome is in God's hands. We must praise Him because of His ability to bring us through the bad times, while giving us good times to hang on to as well!! Dance!!!

Chorus:
Maybe you don't understand
Why I gotta dance
There was something had me down
But it's over now
I'm gonna throw my hands up
Wave 'em all in the air
'Cause all I wanna do is
Dance dance dance

They told me you ain't good enough
Don't look good enough
Don't sing good enough
Maybe you should give it up
And if would've then never could've received
None of the things that He planned for me

So I waited a little longer grew a little stronger
And then I realized something was happening
It's so incredible it's unexplainable
You ought to try Him for yourself
And see because

:::Chorus:::

Sometimes I think about
How we used to be and can't help but remembering
How it was never easy for me no no
But the way God works
It's so amazing He never forgot me
I can't forget Him
That's enough for me to lift my hands
And I'm sorry if you don't understand

:::Chorus:::

All my fears it's over now
And all my pain it's over now
All my doubts, it's over now
They went away, it's over now
No more fear, it's over now
And I'm glad it's over now
Yes so glad
'Cause all I wanna do is
Dance dance dance

:::Chorus:::

Until next time.

Daily Scriptures 8/21/09

Scripture: Psalm 42:8 But each day the Lord pours his unfailing love upon me, and through each night I sing his songs, praying to God who gives me life. (New Living Translation)

Nugget: God’s love is continuous. His unfailing love is given to us in spite of ourselves. That’s why it’s so important for us to praise Him through circumstances, life, and the things that hinder us.

God gave us life to enjoy, but more importantly, He gives us His love. There’s nothing like it!

Daily Scriptures 8/20/09

Scripture: Proverbs 18:1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

Nugget: Wisdom requires pursuit - "through desire" - pursuit is the evidence of desire. Wisdom also requires separation - stepping away from the chaos, from the norms......separating yourself so you can actually focus on what God is speaking. Radios are always transmitting, but we only hear what is on the station when we tune in. Same with God. He is always speaking but are we tuned in?

Daily Scriptures 8/19/09

Scripture: Proverbs 18:15 The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Nugget: The wise man seeks knowledge through listening. It's so simple but yet so difficult for us to do. Why? You go to see an expert on some topic, and the first thing you want to do is share your perspective on the topic. Gosh! Are you kidding me? This is an expert. Won't your time be better spent just listening to what they have to say? Worst case, it's nothing groundbreaking and you discard; or it's great and you learn a lot. However, most of us just like hearing the sounds of our own voices. God help us to listen!

God Handles Things!!!

I remember hearing from my elders that "God can handle things better than we can". Little did I know that I would develop a deeper meaning of this as I got older. I know so many people who hold on to things, people, hurt, circumstances, & more. These are elements that can hinder so much in their lives.

In the past few months, I have realized more & more how God can handle things. He has done this right before my eyes. With this being said, there's no reason for us to hang onto past hurts & the desire to "get someone back" for what they have done. Our main job is to live this life that God has given us & to let Him guide us in it :)

So how to we let God step in? By stepping back! Stop trying to do everything & all things; stop holding on to the things you need to let go of; stop getting in God's way from letting Him step in!! This list can go on & on!

What can you change to let God handle things? Get out of God's way!!! He's in business :)

Unti next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 8/18/09

Scripture: Jeremiah 33:6 "But then I will bring health and healing to the people there. I will heal them and let them enjoy great peace and safety.” (New Century Version)

Nugget: It in the scriptures prior to this one, God mentions bringing healing to Jerusalem; this city had so much going on!! But yet, God promised to bring health, healing, peace, & safety to them. At times, we are the same way: we have so much going on, but do we look to God for the healing that He brings?

Don’t look at your situation or circumstance in determining the final outcome. Look to God who can do all things!

Daily Scriptures 8/17/09

Scripture: Proverbs 12:18 There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword; but the tongue of the wise is health.

Nugget: You can tell wise people by the manner of their speech. Note that the wise person's speech is not flattery, or seeing white but calling it black; rather it's speaking the truth but in love - that is why the Bible says "the tongue of the wise is health".

Praise Song: "Imagine Me"

This week's Praise Song is Kirk Franklin's "Imagine Me". I love this song. It makes me think of the end product, the final result: what's there after all of the hard times, the taking away of pain, & how God sees us. Just to see ourselves through His eyes would be amazing!

Imagine me
Loving what I see when the mirror looks at me cause I
I imagine meIn a place of no insecurities
And I'm finally happy causeI imagine me

Letting go of all of the ones who hurt me
Cause they never did deserve me
Can you imagine me?
Saying no to thoughts that try to control me
Remembering all you told me
Lord, can you imagine me?
Over what my mama said
And healed from what my daddy did
And I wanna live and not read that page again

[Chorus:]
Imagine me, being free, trusting you totally finally I can...
Imagine me
I admit it was hard to see
You being in love with someone like me
But finally I can...
Imagine me

Being strong
And not letting people break me down
You won't get that joy this time around
Can you imagine me?
In a world (in a world) where nobody has to live afraid
Because of your love fears gone away
Can you imagine me?

[Bridge:]
Letting go of my past
And glad I have another chance
And my heart will dance
'Cause I don't have to read that page again

[Chorus x2]

[Vamp:]
Gone, gone, it's gone, all gone

Be encouraged all! God continues to work on us daily!! We are works in progress.

Until next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 8/14/09

Scripture: Proverbs 11:12 He that is void of wisdom despiseth his neighbour; but a man of understanding holdeth his peace.

Nugget: The man of understanding holds his peace, not because he is fond of or buddy-buddy with his neighbor, but wisdom dictates that he maintains peace with the human being nearby (his neighbor) or perharps relocate. It doesn't seem safe to draw battle lines openly with someone right next to you. Something to reflect on.

Daily Scriptures 8/13/09

Scripture: Proverbs 11:4 Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.

Nugget: Money answers a lot of things, but not all. Riches profit not in the day of wrath.....that day of wrath could be when after spending lots of money on the best healthcare, your doctor says your illness is incurable and you have just a few days left to live; or it could be a child who despite the best upbringing, education, etc - is convicted for a crime in which they will spend the rest of their life in jail; or a child who is hooked on drugs and despite the best rehabilitation treatment refuses to reform. The list can go on. Point being, in that day of wrath - what will deliver you?

Daily Scriptures 8/11/09

Scripture: Proverbs 10:22 The blessing of the LORD, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.

Nugget: Not all riches are equal. Some come with sorrow; others without. Some come with dirtied hands; others with clean hands. However, note the blessing of the Lord is not riches......the blessing of the Lord maketh rich....that means it is much more than riches; and it gives "clean", "peaceful" riches. Seek the blessing and not the output (riches); seek the giver (God) and not the gift (riches). With the giver comes much more than riches.

My NABJ Convention Experience

I am so glad that I had the opportunity to attend the NABJ Convention in Tampa this year. What a great experience. I previously wrote a little about Day 1, but that didn't do the whole experience justice!

My first day began with "The Business of Freelancing" workshop. The panelists were so informative & willing to offer all the information they could regarding the freelancing aspect of the journalism industry. Some of these wonderful panelists included Katti Gray and Patrick L. Riley. I don't think that my pen stopped moving the whole time!!! I learned a lot about what to do, what to expect, & to know where I am going with my talent. There must be a plan & I must know how to execute it!

Later, the welcome reception was held. There I met two amazing authors, Barbara A. Seals Nevergold & Peggy Brooks-Betram. These talented women have a new book out entitled, "Go, Tell Michelle". The book includes letters from "African American Women Written to the New First Lady". Ms. Nevergold & Ms. Brooks-Betram are very enthusiastic about their book & what it stands for. I know that they will meet their goal of meeting Michelle Obama one day! Their blog can be found at: http://gtmsisterhoodnetwork.blogspot.com/. In addition to these ladies, I got the chance to meet Mr. Roland Martin. Everyone was & is so down-to-earth. Also at this reception, I met a few new friends who I plan to see at the next convention!

(The lovely ladies with Roland Martin)

The next day included a News Conference with Lebron James speaking on his new movie, "More Than a Game". His high school basketball coach, the film-maker, & Tiki Barber were also on site. The movie details the story of Lebron's friendship with his 4 best friends. Looks like it will be a good watch! (I'm sorry I missed the chance to see the sneak preview!)

The evening consisted of "A Magical Night with Walt Disney World". This was an excellent experience! We all were able to see the first 30-minutes of "The Princess and The Frog". For you see, the movie will not be completed in its entirety until the end of the year. But the movie has the first ever African-American/Black Disney princess, Tiana!!!! The talented, Anika Noni Rose, portrays Tiana in the movie. Anika also came & performed a song for us. Wow!! We were also able to take pics with Tiana! You would've thought I was 5-years old all over again.

Friday provided the great workshop, "From Beat to Book: How to Turn Your News Stories into a Best Seller". I learned so much in this workshop about the book publishing process & what I would need to do if/when I decide to take that route. Regina Brooks, literary agent, was over the workshop. The panelists included authors: Lee Hawkins (Wall Street Journal/CNBC), Deborah Owens (Owens Media Group), & Marcia Pledger (of The Plain Dealer & Money Magazine).

Nia Long and Chris Rock were in attendance for a Q&A after the special screening of Chris' documentary/movie, "Good Hair". The movie will make you think about African-American hair & the things we do with our hair. Now we know that Chris always adds his funny spin on things, so you will enjoy it, but will walk away learning something for sure.

The entire experience was one that I will remember. I know I'm only giving a taste of what it was like, but as they say, "I guess you had to be there". I cannot end this post without mentioning my two newest friends/buddies/fellow guys in the industry, Mario Davis Jr. (The Doctor of Love ---this is what his name tag said!), and Eric Woodyard. Two very talented young men who have bright futures ahead of them. Can't wait to see them in San Diego for the next conference.

Until next next time.

Blessings,

~Lisi P.

Daily Scriptures 8/10/09

Scripture: John 5:17 But Jesus said to them, "My Father never stops working, and so I keep working, too." (New Century Version)

Nugget: Always working, that’s our God!! Even when we can’t see Him at work, He’s doing something. We just have to believe in Him & His will for us. In spite of our situation, we must follow this example: keep working as God works. Don’t get sedentary! As you’re working, God works: there’s nothing He can’t do on your behalf.

Praise Song: "You Are the Living Word"

This week's praise song is Fred Hammond's "You Are the Living Word". There's so much we can say about Jesus!!!! This song is speaks volumes; it speaks the truth!

Bread of life sent down from glory
Many things You were on Earth
A Holy King, a carpenter
You are the Living Word

Bread of Heaven sent down from glory
Many things You were on Earth
A Holy King, a carpenter's Son
You are the Living Word [2x]

Awesome Ruler, Gentle Redeemer
God with us, the Living Truth
And what a friend we have in You
You are the Living Word [2x]

(But when we put it all together this is what we like to call You)

Jesus, Jesus, that's what we call You
Manger born, put on a tree
You died to save humanity
You are the Living Word [4x]

Oh, oh, oh
You are the Living Word [3x]

Jesus, Jesus, that's what we call You
Jesus, Jesus oh, oh
You are the Living Word [3x then fade]

My First Day.....

My first day at the conference was amazing!!!! I met so many people. Many authors, Public Relations reps, people who have worked for Oprah, and so many more!!!! It is an awesome thing to see the many veterans in the industry as well as those who are just starting out! We are in the same boat, but are surrounded by so many who can guide us & show us how to get things done.

I met Roland Matrin yesterday!!! Awesome!! For those who do not know him he's done everything from "Black in America" to commentating for the Tom Joyner Morning Show and is now on TV One!!

This is only a short synopsis of Day 1. I will be writing more soon.

Until next time.

On My Way.....

Today, I'm leaving for my first NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) Conference. I'm excited about meeting other journalists, writers, authors, & more. I've always heard that the conferences are good & you will learn a lot. So I'm up for that!!! *smile*

I'm learning more & more about enjoying each day, as the next day is not guaranteed! We must always be thankful for where we are, even if it's not where we want to be. Because if we aren't where we want to be, then we can be working towards that by God's grace!!!

Try something new today or soon! You never know where it will lead you.

So for today, on my way to my next adventure. I'll definitely blog about it!

Until next time.

Blessings,

Daily Scriptures 8/4/09

Scriptures: Psalm 1:1-3 1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Nugget: Note that the blessed man is identified by not just what he does, but even moreso by what he avoids. The evidence of a blessed man is:

a) Whatsoever he doeth shall prosper; aka everything they touch turns to gold.
b) Fruit that comes forth in season: timely blessings; things happening at the right time.

Review both what you do and don't do, and see where you need to make changes to be like the Psalms 1 man.

Daily Scriptures 8/3/09

Scripture: II Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight

Nugget: Faith is just knowing that God is working on your behalf. It’s not half-stepping and second guessing!! It’s knowing that in spite of what you don’t see that He’s got it all under control!

Merriam-Webster dictionary states that faith is “belief and trust in and loyalty to God”. Belief, trust, and loyalty---knowing that God is doing what He said He would do.

Quote: “He who has faith has... an inward reservoir of courage, hope, confidence, calmness, and assuring trust that all will come out well - even though to the world it may appear to come out most badly.” -B.C. Forbes

For My Singletons: Pt. 9

I've been trying to figure out how to write this one, so here goes. A little while ago, a married man asked me for my number. I don't know if he thought I was crazy or naive or what, but he was not getting that or anything else from me. I don't get it, why would a married person think I would want him? This particular person has a lot of children too; why don't these people respect their marriage & family & God? It's sad because a lot of the married ones who approach me or my friends are "Christians".

I just think about the women who probably tell these men "yes" & end up in some crazy situation. Look at the whole Steve McNair situation; no one deserves to die like that, but we must know that our decisions have consequences behind them & you never know how someone will react.

This posting doesn't just go for my single women who are being approached by men, because I'm sure there are single guys who are being approached by married women. I just pray for the marriages out there; the true marriages where the couples are seeking God, trying to live & to do right. It gives us single people hope that these marriages do exist & are the way that God has designed marriage to be.
As for myself & my single friends, we want our own marriages, not to be in the midst of someone else's. Prayer is key for all of us.
Until next time.
Blessings,
~Lisi P.
