Daily Scriptures 4/30/13

Scripture: Proverbs 23:9 Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice. (NLT)

Nugget: There are just some people who will not heed to wise advice. You can speak to these individuals & be the best person to listen to their issues/problems, but the bottom line is they will not take wise counsel.

I’ve learned over time, the best thing to do is to pray for these people; God can definitely handle things better than we can. Of course, He knows the person’s situation better than we do & can lead the individual in the right direction.

Don’t waste any precious time on the people who will not listen, instead allow God to do His will & His work.

Quote: “The true secret of giving advice is, after you have honestly given it, to be perfectly indifferent whether it is taken or not, and never persist in trying to set people right.” -Hannah Whitall Smith

Daily Scriptures 4/24/13

Scripture: Matthew 4:1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (NKJV)

Nugget: Sometimes our struggles & problems can become overwhelming. For me, when this happens, of course I pray, but then I begin to think on the power I have in Jesus; the power He has to change things to work in my favor. I also begin to reflect on the fact that there’s “nothing new under the sun”. Whatever we may be facing, Jesus has faced too (or has faced something similar or relatable). This scripture points out that He was to be tempted by the devil.

Yes, Jesus faced temptations & other struggles; however, it’s how He handled these instances that we must focus on. He had faith that God would bring Him through; He had knowledge of & knew God’s word in order to combat what He was facing. Jesus knew the power He had & acted on this power.

Most times we don’t know the power we have in God & His word; we forget the example that Jesus set for us. Let us not so easily give up or get discouraged---God loves us too much for us to be discouraged by the challenges we face. Don’t relinquish the power & praise you have to these challenges, use power & praise to face them & to overcome them.

Quote: “Jesus spoke the Word of God throughout His ministry. When faced with the devil's lies and temptations, He countered with the truth of God's Word. The spoken Word of God is like a living, powerful sword in our mouths (Hebrews 4:12), and if Jesus depended upon it to face challenges in life, so can we.” -Mary Fairchild

"YOLO": You Only Live Once

This past weekend was a great one for me! I truly enjoyed the time with my friends & even got some “me” time in as well. It became a reminder to me not to take this precious gift we call life for granted.

Although this weekend was a great one for me, there were some difficult moments as well. Six months ago, my hairdresser lost her life being a bystander to domestic violence. Her business partner was involved in a relationship in which the boyfriend came into their salon & took revenge out on everyone who was in the salon. This story made national news & headlines. It definitely is difficult to think about, let alone talk about. Needless to say, I have been doing my hair on my own for the past 6 months. Well, this past weekend, I returned to the original shop my hairdresser worked at before going out on her own. God truly worked it out where He put familiar faces into my return visit, making it one that I could both cry at, laugh at, & remember my hairdresser in the way that I want to remember her. Although the visit was difficult, it was therapeutic. I will always remember my beloved hairdresser & the place she had (& continues to have) in my heart & my life. She is truly missed.

As part of my weekend, I had the chance to run & spend time with my running group sisters! They are truly amazing. During this time, one of the mentioned to me the saying, “YOLO”. I can tell you, I never heard this saying before; thank goodness in the next sentence she said what it meant without me even asking: You Only Live Once. Wow. How fitting this was for the day I had before me (I went to the salon after my morning run). I think that the encouraging words given to me by my friends, family, & by my sister-in-running helped me in my decision to return to getting my hair done & visiting another hairdresser at the original salon (for you see, my hairdresser had been the only one who has done my hair for me, except for one visit as she was on vacation. The hairdresser from the one other visit is who I saw this weekend). So it was a very difficult trip for me.

With all this being said, the next day, I heard the saying “YOLO” again. It’s amazing how God works. I think that this was truly His message for me for this weekend. In the midst of the great times, the tears I shed at the salon, & spending time with friends, God reminded me that life is so short; there’s nothing or no one I should take for granted. He also reminded me of the gift of time, which is just as precious as this life we have.

I know I’ve blogged about this before, but don’t take anything or anyone for granted. Let people know what they mean to you while they’re still here walking this earth. There are many things I wish that I could’ve said to both my Grandpa & my hairdresser, both of whom I lost last year; but I carry them with me in my heart, prayers, & memories, remembering & feeling all that they mean to me.

Enjoy life---don’t put anything off until tomorrow---work to achieve your goals & dreams; allowing God to use you for His glory & all that He has in store. There’s so much to life; we must do our best to remember this & to live life this way.

Remember You Only Live Once.

Until next time.

Daily Scriptures 4/18/13

Scripture: Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. (NIV)

Nugget: With so much going on in today’s times, many may not believe that God is present. However, He is. God is continually watching over us, guiding us, & reminding us that His presence is there. Sometimes, it’s up to us to stop & take notice; other times, His presence is evident in the smallest of occurrences.

Looking at the news, my heart & prayers go out to everyone affected by the bombings, shootings, storms, floods, etc. that we’ve had recently. Many of us do our best not to question God as to “why” these things happen; instead we must pray harder, showing Him that we believe in His power & will. And we must take time to read & study our guidebook, the Bible, in order to understand some of the things that are happening, as they are mentioned there. God is trying to tell & show us something; we must pay attention.

God’s eyes are everywhere; upon us all. Don’t let the occurrence of today dampen your faith or belief in our God.

Quote: “God’s grace is not infinite. God is infinite, and God is gracious. We experience the grace of an infinite God, but grace is not infinite. God sets limits to His patience and forbearance. He warns us over and over again that someday the ax will fall and His judgment will be poured out.” -R.C. Sproul

Daily Scriptures 4/16/13

Scripture: Isaiah 58:8 Then your light shall break forth like the morning, Your healing shall spring forth speedily, And your righteousness shall go before you; The glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. (NKJV)

Nugget: When I read this scripture, the first thought that came to mind was “breakthrough”. The breakthrough after a long battle, struggle, or sickness. This breakthrough could be anything that someone sees as a hindrance or difficulty to him/herself.

I think it’s a reminder that God is on our side through whatever we’re going through. Most times when we’re facing something, we don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. To me, light is symbol of life---something greater on the other side of our struggles or battles. God gave us Jesus as our guiding light through our difficulties (He’s also our light during good times too).

This scripture even mentions “the glory of the Lord” being our “rear guard”. Wow, what a reminder that God sees fit to be in us, around us, & even “watching our backs”!! Don’t ever think that you’re alone in what you’re facing; God has it all covered, leading us to our breakthrough! What a great God we serve.

Quote: “When people patiently and expectantly wait on God in the midst of horrible circumstances, suddenly God breaks through. So don't give up! Don’t stop believing! Stay full of hope and expectation. God's power is limitless, and He'll break through for you.” -Joyce Meyer

Daily Scriptures 4/15/13

Scripture: Proverbs 30:6 Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar. (NKJV)

Nugget: I’ve found that there are many people who take God’s word from the Bible & turn the word to fit their own benefit. We’ve all known someone to do so! They can take scripture & turn it into something we’ve never heard before. Sometimes you wonder if you’re reading the same Bible they are!

We have to know God’s word for ourselves. We must study, read, gain knowledge, attend church & Bible Study, & show ourselves approved. This eliminates us taking God’s word out of context & adding to it (or hearing additions to it from others).

There’s nothing like knowing God & His word for yourself!

Quote: “We fail in our duty to study God's Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy.” -R.C. Sproul

Daily Scriptures 4/11/13

Scripture: Proverbs 24:27 Put your outdoor work in order and get your fields ready; after that, build your house. (NIV)

Nugget: In reading this scripture, I’m reminded to be prepared, or to be in preparation, regarding what’s to come. So many times we feel that we are ready for something, when in reality, we aren’t even prepared for it. Just think of the things that you’ve tried to obtain too soon & how there was a lesson (or lessons) learned from it.

One analogy that I like to use is to “not to remove the training wheels too early.” Envision teaching a child to ride a bike, but removing the training wheels too early; most times, the child ends up hurt. I’m not saying to leave the training wheels on the bike forever (*smile*), but there is preparation & training before the training wheels are removed. This is how God is with us.

Are you getting prepared, gaining knowledge, growing in the meantime, etc. regarding what you’re seeking from God? If not, it’s never too late to start to get ready in order to “build your house.”

Quote: "Isn't it funny how something that will later be a blessing can be a curse if you get it too soon." -T.D. Jakes

Daily Scriptures 4/9/13

Scriptures: Psalm 124:2-3 2“If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, When men rose up against us, 3Then they would have swallowed us alive, When their wrath was kindled against us (NKJV)

Nugget: I’ve heard the saying “If the Lord had not been by my side, where would I be?” Little did I know that these famous words were actually in the Bible! True enough, there’s nothing new under the sun, but it’s always a good feeling when we have that “Ahh Haa” moment!

There are so many things that we wouldn’t have made it through without our Lord by our side. What comfort we have in knowing that He is always & forever present; keeping us from hurt, harm, & danger. Now true enough, there will be things that we’re going to experience due to circumstances that arise, but never will God leave us.

Take some time today to reflect on where you would be if our Lord hadn’t been by your side. It’s amazing how differently all of our life stories would be without His presence.

Quote: “One of the most arduous spiritual tasks is that of giving up control and allowing the Spirit of God to lead our lives.” -Henri Nouwen

Daily Scriptures 4/8/13

Scriptures: Psalm 38:8-9 8I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart. 9Lord, all my desire is before You; And my sighing is not hidden from You. (NKJV)

Nugget: Sometimes we have so much going on & so much that we’re facing that all we can do is call out to God. During these times, it’s when we’ve most likely reached our limits regarding what we can handle & all that we’re facing. Yes, these times are very challenging & test every bit of our being, but the good thing is, God is ever present in our time of help.

What I’ve learned during these times, is not to go to everyone first & then seek God. God shouldn’t be my last stop on the road to me seeking answers & peace. I’ve learned to call on Him first. Of course, He may send answers & direction from other people, but the thing is, He would’ve led me to these individuals after seeking Him for answers.

What are you seeking? Have you looked everywhere else first? Have your desires, troubles, sighs, groaning, etc. been placed before God? Seek Him in all you do.

Quote: “Happy moments, praise God. Difficult moments, seek God. Quiet moments, worship God. Painful moments, trust God. Every moment, thank God.” -Unknown

Daily Scriptures 4/2/13

Scripture: Acts 26:21 For these reasons the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. (NKJV)

Nugget: In my daily reading, I came across this scripture & one of the explanations provided for it. In earlier scriptures, Paul was defending himself regarding the actions he took to preach the Gospel to others. At the same time, he was being persecuted regarding these actions.

My reading went on to reveal Paul & his experiences in a different light; it addressed how people around us, whether it be family, co-workers, church family, friends, etc. can be the ones who we allow to spiritually & emotionally kill us. It went on to say how we allow some people to drain us & bring us down.

This reading reminded me to reflect on relationships I have, or have had, in which this was occurring. What a reminder to evaluate our relationships & not to allow people, their words, or actions to change what God has shown us about our lives & this journey He has for us. We must say no to accepting these individuals in our lives, thoughts, & spiritual well-being. Don’t let these people have such an effect on you that it hinders what God is preparing you for.

Daily Scriptures 4/1/13

Scriptures: 1 Peter 1:14-16 14As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (NIV)

Nugget: As we grow in the Lord & change because of our relationships with Him, there are certain things that we shouldn’t do anymore. Some of these changes & actions may come quickly, others may come over a period of time; the point is that we’re changing (or have changed) for the better.

The actions, thoughts, etc. we used to have are no longer part of our routine. God has changed us. We are accountable for what we do. True enough, there are things that we continue to pray on regarding our growth in Him, but we’re all a work in progress---without His help, we won’t be able to do it.

Thanking God for continued growth & change! All because of Him!

Quote: “We become like that which we behold. We will never be transformed into the likeness of God or be conformed to the image of Christ Jesus until we learn how to behold His beauty. To see Him is to be like Him. As David beheld the beauty of the Lord, as he meditated on the glorious perfections and passions of God's character, he became more like God. More than that, he fell ever more in love with God.” -Sam Storms
